A Template for Reports
Does anyone know how to create a template for reports that can be
linked to every report. Changes in the template would then be
automatically reflected in every report connected to the template.
This is a similar paradigm as a css style sheet. There is a
description of way to do this in "Hitchhiker's Guide to SQL Server 2000
Reporting Services", but it is rather cryptic and involves a lot of
complex hacks.
Thanks,
Woody
MCADA simplier approach may be to store your "template" information in a table.
Create a template rdl that pulls the information, such as a Page Header that
displays your corp. image lets say. If you need to ever change it, you just
need to overwrite the record in the table.
Obviously, everyone who designs reports would have to use the template. To
ensure that everyone, in fact, does use the same template report, you can
have them overwrite the default template with the new template. The following
is the path to the default template.
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\80\Tools\Report
Designer\ProjectItems\ReportProject\Report.rdl
Hope this helps!

A strange problem with updatable partitioned view.
I am working on a distributed database. I defined linked
servers, partitioned views etc. I can delete/insert/update
data from the view. Now the problem is if I add more ID
ranges to the partitioning column in the check, sometimes
it worked or sometimes it didn't. See the following sample
code:
-- Create linked server SERVER0,SERVER1 on two SQL
servers.
-- SERVER0 one one machine
exec sp_addlinkedserver 'SERVER0', '',
N'SQLOLEDB', @.SHostName, '','',N'Test_DB'
exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @.rmtsrvname = 'SERVER0',
@.useself = 'false', @.locallogin = NULL,@.rmtuser ='sa',
@.rmtpassword = ''
exec sp_serveroption @.Server='SERVER0', @.optname
='RPC', @.optvalue='TRUE'
exec sp_serveroption @.Server='SERVER0', @.optname
='RPC OUT', @.optvalue='TRUE'
-- SERVER1 on another machine
exec sp_addlinkedserver 'SERVER1', '',
N'SQLOLEDB', @.SHostName, '','',N'Test_DB'
exec sp_addlinkedsrvlogin @.rmtsrvname = 'SERVER1',
@.useself = 'false', @.locallogin = NULL,@.rmtuser ='sa',
@.rmtpassword = ''
exec sp_serveroption @.Server='SERVER1', @.optname
='RPC', @.optvalue='TRUE'
exec sp_serveroption @.Server='SERVER1', @.optname
='RPC OUT', @.optvalue='TRUE'
-- Create database Test_DB on each server.

It will fail. the error message is "UNION ALL view vwtest
is not updatable becuase a partitioning column is not
found."
I am totally lost. Anyone knows how SQL server decides one
column is a partitioning or not. Here I used the same rule
but the result is different.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.Peter,
did not go through your detailed post. However, I bet that you did your
modification with EM. It is known that when you do such changes in EM to
updateable partitioned view the EM does not do it right. Try use QA. If it
does not work, try recreate the view in QA.

However, I didn't change the constraint from EM. What I
did is that drop the constraint for all servers, then
create the constraint for all servers from QA. It worked
in some cases. It seems if I have more ID ranges or I have
ID ranges with negative value, it will fail. I tried to
recreate the view, it didn't work too.
The code I posted is exactly what I ran in QA.

Oops.
I saw you used Alter Table to add the constraint. Did you try to create the
constraint together with the table creation? Try that.

insert using table names, but only read using view.
Friday, February 24, 2012
A query where two tables are linked to the same another table
I'm not an expert in SQL, if you could help me for that little
problem:
I had tree simple tables with their fields:
[Client] IdClient, Param
[Sale] IdSale, IdClient, Param
[Param] IdParam, Value
How can I retrieve a recordset with this columns ?
IdClient, IdSale, ValueOfParamClient, ValueOfParamSale
The problem is that I can retrieve a Param for one table (Client or
Sale) like this request :
SELECT Client.IdClient, Sale.IdSale, Param.Value
FROM
(Client
INNER JOIN Sale
ON Sale.IdClient = Client.IdClient)
LEFT JOIN Param
ON Param.IdParam = Sale.Param
But how can I retrieve the Param of the another table in a simple
query ? (because I would also like that it works for access)
Thank for your help,

It's not really clear - at least to me - what you're trying to do. It would
be best to post CREATE TABLE and INSERT statements to set up a test case,
along with the results you expect, as that will avoid confusion.

Hi Marc,
Something like this maybe?
SELECT C.IdClient, S.IdSale, PC.Value, PS.Value
FROM Client AS C
INNER JOIN Sale AS S
ON S.IdClient = C.IdClient
INNER JOIN Param AS PC
ON PC.IdParam = C.Param
INNER JOIN Param AS PS
ON PS.IdParam = S.Param
(untested)

Thanks very much Hugo !
I can only test on access today and it works with a few changes (I'll
test later on SqlServer)
For information, the code that works with access :
SELECT Client.IdClient, Sale.IdSale, PC.Value, PS.Value
FROM ((Client
INNER JOIN Sale
ON Sale.IdClient = Client.IdClient)
INNER JOIN Param AS PC
ON PC.IdParam = Client.Param)
INNER JOIN Param AS PS
ON PS.IdParam = Sale.Param
Marc|||You also need to alias your columns:
SELECT Client.IdClient, Sale.IdSale, PC.Value AS PC_Param_Value, PS.Value
as AS PS_Param_Value
FROM ((Client
INNER JOIN Sale
ON Sale.IdClient = Client.IdClient)
INNER JOIN Param AS PC
ON PC.IdParam = Client.Param)
INNER JOIN Param AS PS
ON PS.IdParam = Sale.Param
This gives you the ability to differentiate between the vaues when you are
using the result set.

A Problem in TSQL
I'd like to have a help to the problem.
If I make a SELECT as:
select * from [LS].[msdb].[dbo].[sysfiles]
(hier LS is a linked server) it working fine.
The following lines dont work:
DECLARE @.STR NVARCHAR ( 300 )
SELECT @.STR =3D 'select * from [LS].[msdb].[dbo].[sysfiles]'
EXECUTE @.STR
I get the message:
Server: Nachr.-Nr. 203, Schweregrad 16, Status 2, Zeile 3
Der Name 'SELECT * FROM [LS].[msdb].[dbo].[sysfiles]' ist
kein g=FCltiger Bezeichner.
Whot is wrong?=20
How can I correct it?
Regards
Simon
Hi,
Enclose the varible in parenthesis execute (@.STR)
DECLARE @.STR NVARCHAR ( 300 )
SELECT @.STR = 'select * from [LS].[msdb].[dbo].[sysfiles]'
execute(@.STR)
Or use the below query using sp_executesql
DECLARE @.STR NVARCHAR ( 300 )
SELECT @.STR = 'select * from [LS].[msdb].[dbo].[sysfiles]'
exec sp_executesql @.STR
Thanks
