'aa'='AA' but 'aA' != 'aa' - why?

I have setup a case insensitive database that seems to work in all cases
except when dealing with the letter a. I suspect this has something to do
with the collation. The SQL code at the bottom of this message can
demonstrate the problem.
The select * from cameraassignment fails when the a in assignment is lower
case.
use master
go
CREATE DATABASE [atest]
COLLATE Danish_Norwegian_CI_AS
go
use atest
go
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[CameraAssignment] (
[CameraId] [int] IDENTITY (1, 1) NOT NULL ,
[CameraName] [nvarchar] (30) COLLATE Danish_Norwegian_CI_AS NOT NULL
)
Go
-- This will work
select * from cameraAssignment
go
-- This fails, why'
select * from cameraassignment
goIt is because the difference between the Danish alphabet and English. AA is
sometimes considered as a equivalent of an alphbet like A ( sorry I cannot
type it out, let me take 'X' instead. So, when there is AA and you use LIKE
'A%', system could take AA as X but not AA, However, if there is AAA, like
'NESAAAS', it will take AA as X and the left A will fit the creteria of the
LIKE clause. It is not a bug but some collation difference. So when run a
query, just take it into consideration, such as for a (lower case)

Are there any other character combinations that could be an issue? In order
to get my code to work I am going to go through all the stored procedures an
d
change the SQL that uses the table CameraAssignment so that the A in
assignment is upper case. This also affects any client software calling a
stored procedure that contains a mixed case aa in the name (aA or Aa).

A Question Regarding MSDE Desktop Engine

Dear all,

This week I was told to setup MSDE Desktop Engine on my pc bcz my Access back end db is getting bigger in size. And as a little advance step, I decided to put my Access back end on SQL server.

To be frank, I have no experience with SQL server but after reading the instructions, I have installed MSDE (latest version) on my pc successfully. A small icon of SQL server appeared nearby clock icon of my pc showing the SQL server is running on ASHFAQUEPC.

I shifted a Trial db onto this server in following way.

Considering the opened Trial db would be my BE, from the Tools--Database Utility--Upsize wizard, I followed below steps according to Upsize wizard.

1. I selected Local server and check marked to Use Trusted Connection.
2. And then I selected some tables to export
3. Kept all default attributes of db as it is
4. Selected Let the wizard decide under data option to include.
5. At the next step What application change do you want to make?
a. Create a new Access client/Server application.
b. Link SQL Server tables to existing application.
c. No application changes. (I selected this option)

Then it showed me the report of my db description of changes that were made after deploying it. The report I did not print bcz it was a trial db with one table (2 fields) and a simple query.

My idea was to connect my Trial BE with another one of another Access mdb file so FE would be Access and BE would be from MSDE.

1. Now I dont know how to link my BE to my FE?
2. From where I can directly see my BE? Because SQL Server Service Manager does
not have any menu?
3. Where I was wrong in following steps?

Guidance in this regards is highly appreciated.

With kind regards,
AshfaqueI got it.

The tables of db from MSDE2000A I can get connected thru database project file.

Thanks.
Ashfaque

A Question on SQL Cluster -Urgent

We are planning the following setup as part of our Business Continuity
Planning.
We have an active passive cluster in the production and we will also have
the same setup in the DR setup. But the issue is that we need to keep the
same SQL virtual name in both Production and DR. So in this scenario if we
have to do some maintenance on the DR setup for eg: to apply Service Packs
or any fine tuning, how do we do that? Is there any recommendation or best
practices?
Waiting on an immediate response.
Abhi
Consider using a DNS alias. The apps use the alias, while the virtual
servers can be whatever you want.

You might also consider using database mirroring.

a question for setup experts please

hello,
i have sql server 2000 on my local machine (with enterprise manager etc).
i want to host a website (on a dedicated server) which talks to sql server,
but i dont want to buy another license for the server machine that i am
going to host on (too much money!).
my question is:
is there a way around this? ie: is there a free engine or something that i
can install on my webserver which just stores the datafiles so my webpages
will work.
ideally i would like to DTS data to and from the live server, and also use
my local enterprise manager to view/update data on the live server?
is this possible?
thanksDepending on your requirements, you could deploy MSDE.

A little help with clustered SQL server setup.

Guys,
I keep getting errors while trying to install SQL 2K5 server on Win2K3 x64
R2 SP2 cluster.
The setup sequence was
1. Install SQL client/tools on all nodes
2. Install first instance of SQL server
3. Install SQL SP2 for client/tools on all nodes
4. Install SQL server SP2 for instance
5. Install second instance of SQL server
This step keeps failing no matter what I tried.
I did similar setup before in “slightly” different order and it works fine:
1. Install SQL client/tools on all nodes
2. Install first instance of SQL server
3. Install second instance of SQL server
4. Install third instance of SQL server
5. Install SQL SP2 for client/tools on all nodes
6. Install SQL server SP2 for all instances
With my current setup I don’t want (actually I can not) follow same order.
What if the first instance is already in production AND SP2 is applied
already, and then I need to install a new instance?
Anyway, setup keeps failing on remote nodes with this error:
(I tried both, GUI and command line with exact same result)

A few questions: Clustering & Replication

Hi,
In SQL 2005, with SQL Clustering:
1. Can a THREE-node active/active/active cluster be setup? If yes, is
setting up a three-node a/a/a cluster recommended? Any pitfalls or gotchas
that one needs to be aware of?
With Replication:
1. Can a subscriber in turn be a publisher to another subscriber? i.e. a
subscriber subsribes to a publication from one publisher and then in turn
creates a similar publication, which is subscribed by another subscriber.
2. Can replication (immediate and/or queued updating) be configured between
THREE servers? i.e. each server is a publisher and subcriber to the other two
servers.
We are working on a global strategy to identify how best to keep data in
sync between three geographically located SQL servers, while maintaining
latency as low as possible.
Peer-to-Peer replication was investigated as well, but it did not fit with
our company's strategic plan as one of our requirement is that database
updates can be done at any server, at anytime. Peer-to-Peer allows updates
for a given row only at one database until it has been syncronized with its
peers, which can be done by directing updates for a set of rows to a
particular server.
Your guidance, thougths, and suggestions are very valued and appreciated.
TIA

Yes, although we don't really call it active/active anymore. It's just an
N-node cluster. It has a number of cluster nodes and a number of SQL
instances (virtual servers). The biggest problem with running SQL instances
on all your cluster nodes is that you can have performance problems when you
fail over. Often you add an extra passive node to hold enough capacity in
reserve for failover. This is generally referred to as an N+1 cluster (N
"active" nodes, 1 "passive").

You've got it wrong with Peer-to-Peer. Peer-to-Peer allows update to any
server at anytime. It just has no mechanism to protect you if you make
conflicting changes at nearly the same time, one of the changes will be
lost. The situation you are describing with multiple publishers would
behave in a similar manner.
David|||1) Yes, the gotcha is that at any one time a node may have to support all
three instances which means it will have to be pretty beefy to offer optimal
performance to all three instances
Replication
1) Yes, its called republishing. It normally used to provide hierarchies in
merge replication to scale out.
2) No, but you might want to look at bi-directional transactional
replication which can be used to do this. It would provide bi-directional
replication between node a and node b, and node a and node c, but not
between node b and node c unless you implement some pretty complex
filtering.
When Peer to peer out of the box encounters an error its distribution agents
will stop until you fix the error. You can run it in the continue on data
consistency errors profile, but doing this will leave your databases in an
inconsistent state.

the only thing I'd add to the other comments is that merge replication
essentially covers point (2). The terminology is in conflict but the
functionality is the same ie there would only be need for one publisher, and
the pthers would be subscribers, but for the most part, there isn't a
distinction between these roles in merge replication.

For replication Q. 2: You may have already answered this but I was wondering
if a bi-directional replication were to exists between node A and B, could
node B republish the data to node C unidirectionally?
